One of Germany's most important and controversial artists Murkus Lüpertz (born 1941) has thrived by challenging convention and confounding expectations. Responding to postwar abstract art he created large-scale gestural reworkings of Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse. Other works range from geometric abstraction to paraphrastic commentary on Michelangelo Picasso and Matisse. Extremely prolific he creates hundreds of works paintings sculptures poems a year.
