Considered a pioneer of the post-minimal and conceptual art movements Mel Bochner is perhaps best known for his paintings sculptures and drawings yet he also became deeply involved with photography in the mid- to late 1960s work that only recently has been exhibited. Illustrated with 119 black and white and 40 color photos and reproductions this book provides a critical look at a virtually unknown body of some 75 innovative and varied photographs. Here too are a number of Bochner's drawings that directly informed his photographic works. In Bochner's photography Scott Rothkopf argues a clear arc can be traced from his grappling with minimalism toward a more rigorous and nuanced articulation of conceptual art.
"An incisive contribution to the growing critical literature on the artist's career. The catalogue (which is superbly designed and illustrated) includes most of Bochner's photographs and related drawings from 1966 to 1969 many of which have never been exhibited or reproduced before." Art Journal
