A colleague of the early abstract expressionists and the surrealists and a close friend of Robert Motherwell William Baziotes exhibited for the first time in 1936 in a group show at the Municipal Art Gallery New York. André Masson invited Baziotes to participate with Motherwell David Hare and others in the 1942 exhibition First Papers of Surrealism at the Whitelaw Reid Mansion in New York and by 1948 Baziotes had joined Motherwell Hare and Mark Rothko in forming the Subjects of the Artist school. This catalog from an exhibit celebrating the 60th anniversary of Baziotes's first solo exhibition at Peggy Guggenheim's Art of This Century New York brings together 45 paintings and 20 watercolor drawings from important private and public collections. Curator Michael Preble who is also preparing a catalogue raisonné of Baziotes's oeuvre provides the leading essay.
