The Qur'an with Annotated Interpretation in Modern English comes from a respected author and scholar of Islam Ali Unal. Unal has authored and edited various books including Islam Addresses Contemporary Issues Resurrection and the Afterlife and Islamic Perspectives on Science. He recently finished translation of Bediuzzaman Said Nursi's Mektubat which will be titled as The Letters.
Ali Unal's interpretation of the Qur'an is an in-depth study on the meaning and interpretation of Qur'anic verses with extensive notes of explanation borrowed from various authoritative sources on the interpretation of the Qur'an. As Fethullah Gulen notes in his foreword to this work Unal "aims to present for the benefit of everyone any truth which he has found to be in compliance with the essentials of Islam." His particular approach is to place the explanation of a specific verse in conjunction with the reasons of revelation for it (asbab-u nudhul) while at the same time providing an interpretation that is relevant to the contemporary understanding. Metaphorical or allegorical verses are presented in line what the Sunni tradition has generally tended to. As first of its kind several maps and photos are included in the book to make the interpretation more understandable and easier to trace. In addition the appendix section includes essays on the most controversial issues regarding the Qur'an and Islam.
