Orhan Veli was born in Istanbul in 1914. He studied philosophy worked for the Turkish Post Office and as a literary translator. A founder of the Garip ("strange") movement he is one of Turkey's most popular poets. His poems are innovative appealing freely to the senses heart and mind. He died following an accident at the early age of 36. He is buried in Istanbul in the Aşiyan cemetery on the shores of the Bosphorus.
